Trump Slaps 10% Tariff on Eight European Countries Over Greenland Standoff

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a sweeping new trade measure against eight European countries, imposing a 10 percent tariff on all goods they export to the United States, following a growing diplomatic and military standoff over Greenland.

The affected countries are Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland. According to the president, the tariff will take effect on February 1, 2026, and could rise sharply if tensions over Greenland are not resolved.

The decision follows the deployment of European troops to Greenland, an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, after Trump reportedly threatened to seize the island by force should Denmark refuse to sell it to the United States. Greenland has long been of strategic interest to Washington due to its location and growing importance in global security and defense systems.

In a strongly worded post on social media, President Trump described the actions of the European countries as “reckless” and warned that the situation posed a serious threat to global peace and security.

“Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland have journeyed to Greenland, for purposes unknown,” Trump wrote. “This is a very dangerous situation for the safety, security, and survival of our planet.”

He added that the United States had no choice but to take “strong measures” to force a resolution. “Starting on February 1st, 2026, all of the above-mentioned countries will be charged a 10% tariff on any and all goods sent to the United States of America,” the president said.

Trump further warned that the tariffs would escalate if no agreement is reached. Beginning June 1, 2026, the tariff rate will rise to 25 percent and remain in place until Denmark agrees to what he described as the “complete and total purchase of Greenland” by the United States.

The president also claimed that the U.S. has attempted to acquire Greenland for more than 150 years, arguing that modern weapons systems and defense technologies now make the acquisition more critical than ever.

“Because of the Golden Dome and modern-day weapons systems, both offensive and defensive, the need to acquire [Greenland] is especially important,” Trump said.

The announcement is expected to heighten tensions between the United States and its European allies, with potential repercussions for global trade, diplomacy, and security.
