Six Dead, Several Injured in El-Wak Stadium Stampede During Military Recruitment

A tragic scene unfolded at the El-Wak Sports Stadium in Accra on Wednesday morning, November 12, 2025, when a stampede during the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) recruitment exercise claimed at least six lives and left several others injured.

According to a statement issued by Captain Veronica Adzo Arhin, Acting Director General of Public Relations for the Ghana Armed Forces, the incident occurred around 6:20 a.m., just before the official commencement of the 2025/2026 recruitment exercise.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the tragedy was triggered by an unexpected rush of applicants who broke through security barriers and forced their way into the stadium ahead of schedule. The sudden surge caused chaos and confusion, resulting in multiple casualties.

“The unfortunate incident led to the death of six potential recruits and left many others injured,” the statement confirmed. The injured individuals are currently receiving emergency medical care at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra.

The Ghana Armed Forces said medical teams are working tirelessly to stabilise those affected, while arrangements are being made to formally notify the families of the deceased.

“The Ghana Armed Forces extends its deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and wishes a swift recovery to those injured,” the statement added. “Further updates will be communicated in due course.”

The incident has cast a shadow over what was expected to be the start of a new recruitment phase for thousands of young Ghanaians eager to serve their country.
