Prez Mahama Hasn’t Ruled Out Declaring a State of Emergency on Galamsey — Kwakye Ofosu

Presidential Spokesperson and Minister of State for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has clarified that President John Mahama has not ruled out the possibility of declaring a state of emergency in the fight against illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Super Morning Show, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu explained that while the President acknowledges the severity of the problem, such a drastic measure would only be considered if necessary.

“On the matter of state of emergency, the President has said that there are conventional approaches currently being deployed, which he believes can help us achieve the objective of wiping out this canker once and for all. However, when it becomes necessary, a state of emergency may be deployed,” he said.

He emphasized that declaring a state of emergency is an extraordinary measure that carries significant consequences and therefore requires strong justification.

“It means setting aside existing laws and adopting extraordinary, sometimes very harsh and drastic measures. The declaration must be based on tangible reasoning so that the outcomes justify the effort,” he noted.

Mr. Kwakye Ofosu added that the President would weigh the available information and the capacity of already deployed resources before taking such a decision.

“He believes that gains are currently being made, which could be sustained. Only when it becomes necessary to take measures that might inconvenience citizens or override existing legal frameworks will he declare a state of emergency,” he explained.

The spokesperson also rejected suggestions that the government was underestimating the galamsey menace. According to him, President Mahama has, since assuming office, taken concrete steps to clamp down on illegal mining and remains committed to eradicating the problem.

“The government fully appreciates the genuine concerns surrounding galamsey because of the threats it poses. People are deeply worried and demand urgent action and that urgent action is already underway. Since becoming President, John Mahama has done everything necessary to combat galamsey,” he said.
