President John Dramani Mahama has approved a recommendation from the Police Council to grant Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Christian Tetteh Yuhonu a two-year contract extension. The re-engagement, confirmed in a letter dated November 25, 2025 and signed by the Secretary to the President, Dr. Callistus Mahama, takes effect from December 28, 2025.
Mr. Yuhonu was originally scheduled to retire in December 2025 upon reaching the statutory retirement age. However, the extension means he will now remain in office until December 2027.
According to the letter, the decision follows the Police Council’s strong belief that the IGP’s continued leadership is crucial to sustaining ongoing reforms, improving operational efficiency, and maintaining stability within the Ghana Police Service.
“I write to inform you that, following the recommendation of the Police Council and in accordance with the relevant provisions governing the administration of the Ghana Police Service, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic, has approved your re-engagement for an additional two (2) years,” the letter read.
It further noted that Mr. Yuhonu is required to confirm his acceptance of the renewed mandate within three days of receiving the notification.
Mr. Christian Tetteh Yuhonu was appointed IGP by President Mahama on March 13, 2025, following consultations with the Council of State, and was sworn into office the next day. He succeeded Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
The latest extension underscores the administration’s confidence in his leadership and its commitment to continuity within the service.
