President Mahama Calls for Stronger Public Education to Protect the Cedi

President John Dramani Mahama has underscored the urgent need for intensified public education on the proper use of Ghana’s national currency, arguing that a modern and stable monetary system depends not only on strong institutions but also on an informed and responsible citizenry.

Speaking at the Currency Anniversary Conference on Tuesday, November 18, the President outlined three critical areas where public awareness must be strengthened to safeguard the stability and integrity of the cedi.

First, he urged the Bank of Ghana to step up campaigns encouraging the use of the cedi for all domestic transactions. According to him, wider acceptance of the local currency helps to strengthen economic stability and minimizes unnecessary exposure to foreign exchange risks.

President Mahama also drew attention to the growing problem of poor currency handling. He warned that careless treatment of banknotes increases printing costs, shortens the lifespan of notes in circulation, and ultimately undermines the integrity of the currency itself.

“We must promote responsible use of the cedi,” he stressed, calling on Ghanaians to adopt better habits in managing and handling money.

The final pillar of his message focused on improving financial literacy. An informed public, he noted, is better positioned to detect fraud, make sound financial decisions, and hold national institutions accountable factors that collectively contribute to a more resilient and trustworthy monetary system.

President Mahama’s call adds to ongoing discussions about how to strengthen the cedi, with a renewed emphasis on public responsibility as a key component of monetary stability.
