NPP Opens High-Stakes Flagbearer Race Ahead of 2028 Elections.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has opened nominations for its presidential primaries, setting off an early and ambitious internal contest as the party charts its path toward the 2028 general elections.

At a press briefing in Accra today, July 29, NPP General Secretary Justin Kodua Frimpong announced the start of the nomination process, calling on qualified party members to step forward. “I’m happy to announce to you that we have officially opened nominations for our party members to become presidential candidates of our party for the 2028 elections,” he stated.

The nomination window opens today and will close on Thursday, August 28, 2025, with the party set to elect its flagbearer on Saturday, January 31, 2026.

But entering the race comes at a significant cost. Aspirants must pay GH₵100,000 for nomination forms and an additional GH₵500,000 as a filing fee — a total of GH₵600,000 just to get on the ballot.

That price tag is drawing attention once again to the financial demands of political leadership in Ghana. While the party argues these fees help fund the logistics of nationwide primaries, critics say the high cost sidelines qualified candidates without deep pockets or powerful backers, further reinforcing elitism in political participation.

The NPP’s early start is also a strategic signal. By beginning the process more than two years before the national elections, the party appears to be prioritizing unity and readiness  giving its eventual candidate ample time to rally support, build a national message, and consolidate the party base after what could be a fiercely competitive primary.

So far, no aspirants have formally picked up forms, but several names have been circulating in party corridors, and political watchers expect an intense race once the field begins to take shape.

The battle lines are not yet drawn, but the countdown has officially begun and the NPP is clearly in no mood to wait.
