Morocco Hails Successful AFCON 2025 Hosting Despite Controversial Final

Morocco has been widely commended for successfully hosting the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), which ran from December 21, 2025, to January 18, 2026, despite controversies that surrounded the final match of the tournament.

In a statement following the conclusion of the competition, King Mohammed VI expressed deep appreciation to Moroccans nationwide for their collective efforts in delivering what he described as a historic and globally acclaimed tournament.

“His Majesty extends his thanks to all citizens, particularly those across the various host cities, whose dedication contributed to this outstanding achievement, recognised and praised worldwide,” the statement said.

The King paid special tribute to the Moroccan people and supporters of the national team, noting the country’s rise to eighth place in the FIFA world rankings. He attributed this progress to Morocco’s forward-looking sports policies and sustained investment in modern infrastructure, which continue to nurture young talent capable of representing the nation with pride.

According to King Mohammed VI, AFCON 2025 went beyond football, serving as a powerful showcase of Morocco’s development and a symbol of Africa’s growing potential on the global stage.

“This edition of the continental competition will remain unforgettable. It reflects the qualitative leap achieved by the Kingdom at multiple levels,” he stated.

However, the tournament’s grand finale between Morocco and Senegal was overshadowed by unfortunate incidents. Tensions erupted after Senegalese players protested a VAR-awarded penalty, leading to confrontations between some supporters and security personnel.

While acknowledging the regrettable scenes, the King struck a conciliatory tone, expressing confidence that calm and unity would ultimately prevail once emotions cool.

“This Moroccan success is also an African success,” he said. “We are proud to have offered a month of joy, passion, and sporting emotion to our people and to the continent as a whole.”

Despite the final-day challenges, AFCON 2025 is expected to be remembered as a landmark tournament that reinforced Morocco’s reputation as a leading host of major international sporting events.
