Morocco Edge Nigeria on Penalties to Reach AFCON Final

Morocco booked their place in the final of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations on Wednesday night after overcoming Nigeria 4–2 in a tense penalty shootout, with goalkeeper Yassine Bounou once again emerging as the hero on the grand stage.

The highly anticipated semi-final at a packed Stade Prince Moulay Abdallah lived up to expectations as a battle between two African heavyweights, but it was not a night for goals. Instead, discipline, tactical awareness and nerves defined a closely contested encounter that remained goalless after 120 minutes.

Morocco enjoyed more possession and territorial dominance during regulation time, attempting to control the rhythm of the game. However, the Atlas Lions struggled to convert their control into clear-cut chances, repeatedly coming up against a resolute and well-drilled Nigerian backline.

Nigeria, who had been one of the most attacking teams of the tournament with 14 goals scored prior to the semi-final, looked unusually subdued. The Super Eagles found it difficult to impose themselves offensively, as Morocco’s defence executed a near-perfect game plan. Key attacking threats including Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Akor Adams were effectively contained, limiting Nigeria to only a handful of threatening moments.

Extra time followed a similar pattern, with both teams showing signs of fatigue and opting for caution rather than risk. Neither side was willing to overcommit, and attacking intent faded as the prospect of penalties loomed.

The stalemate ultimately set the stage for a dramatic shootout, where Bounou’s composure and shot-stopping ability proved decisive. Morocco converted four of their penalties, while the goalkeeper denied Nigeria at crucial moments, sealing a 4–2 victory and sending the home fans into celebration as the Atlas Lions marched into the AFCON final.
