Military Helicopter Goes Missing, Later Found Burned in Ashanti Region

Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) helicopter has gone missing and is feared to have crashed in the Ashanti Region, according to an official statement released by the military on Wednesday, August 6, 2025.

The helicopter, a Z-9 model, departed Accra at exactly 9:12 a.m. and was headed to Obuasi. However, the aircraft reportedly went off the radar shortly after takeoff, triggering immediate concern from aviation and military authorities.

In a press release issued a few hours later, the GAF confirmed the incident:

“A GAF helicopter, Z9, that took off this morning at 0912hrs from Accra and heading for Obuasi is currently off the radar. All efforts are being made to establish contact. On board were 3 crew and 5 passengers.”

Shortly after the GAF’s announcement, disturbing reports emerged from Adansi Akrofuom, where eyewitnesses said a helicopter had crashed and exploded in flames.

Residents of Adansi Brofoyedu, a nearby community, described a fiery crash site with the helicopter completely destroyed.

“The helicopter burned beyond recognition,” one eyewitness told local media.

Although investigations are still ongoing, unconfirmed reports suggest there may have been fatalities, as body parts were allegedly found at the scene. The identities of the victims have not yet been officially verified.

The aircraft is believed to have been on a routine flight, as it reportedly plies the Accra–Obuasi route every Wednesday. While the cause of the crash remains unknown, poor weather has been mentioned as a possible factor.

Military officials and emergency response teams have since arrived at the scene, and a full investigation has been launched to determine what led to the tragic incident.
