Mahama Ayariga Withdraws from NDC Committee Probing Ayawaso East Vote-Buying Allegations

Majority Leader and Leader of Government Business in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, has withdrawn from the National Democratic Congress (NDC) investigation committee set up to probe alleged vote-buying during the party’s Ayawaso East parliamentary primaries.

In a post shared on his  X page on Sunday, February 8, Mr Ayariga explained that recent developments had made his continued membership of the committee untenable. His decision follows a call by the NDC Majority Caucus in Parliament for the cancellation of the Ayawaso East primary.

“In view of the position taken by the Caucus of the NDC in Parliament regarding the cancellation of the Ayawaso East primary, it has become untenable for me to serve on the Investigation Committee set up by the National Executive of the NDC,” he stated.

Mr Ayariga added that he had formally informed the party leadership of his decision and requested that a replacement be appointed. “I have therefore notified the party that a suitable replacement should be appointed,” he said.

The NDC had earlier constituted a three-member committee to investigate allegations of widespread inducement and vote-buying that reportedly marred the parliamentary primaries held last Saturday in the Ayawaso East Constituency. The probe forms part of the party’s efforts to uphold internal democratic principles and address concerns raised by members following the conduct of the election.
