Kurt Okraku Meets IGP to Strengthen Sports Security and Youth Football Development

The President of the Ghana Football Association, Kurt Okraku, has paid a courtesy call on the Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, at the National Police Headquarters to deepen collaboration between football authorities and the country’s security services.

The meeting focused on improving sports policing, protecting the integrity of the game, and expanding youth football development across Ghana.

A key outcome was the GFA’s commitment to work with the Police Service to build a modern community football pitch at the Police Depot School in Tesano. The project is part of the GFA’s “Power to the Youth” initiative, which aims to upgrade grassroots infrastructure and create more opportunities for young football talents.

Kurt Okraku praised the Police Service for supporting football through its teams, Police Ladies and Police National FC. Police Ladies compete in the Malta Guinness Women’s Premier League, while Police National FC play in the Access Bank Division One League. He also highlighted Police Ladies’ achievement of reaching the semi-finals of the 2025 CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU B Qualifiers in Côte d’Ivoire.

The GFA President stressed that sports policing requires a specialised approach due to the emotional intensity and crowd management challenges of football matches. He called on law enforcement to intensify efforts against match manipulation and illegal betting and urged them to prioritise safety at match venues nationwide.

He also appealed for a swift investigation into the death of football fan Nana Pooley to ensure justice and closure for the family and the wider football community.

In response, the IGP assured the GFA of the Police Service’s full support and said enhanced security technology and specialised units would be deployed to curb hooliganism and improve safety at match venues.

The meeting underscores a growing partnership between Ghana’s football leadership and national security authorities, focused on youth development, protecting the integrity of the game, and creating a safer football environment across the country.
