The President has directed the Attorney-General to begin legal processes to dissolve the Board of Trustees of the National Cathedral project, following damning findings from an audit conducted by Deloitte.
This was announced by the Minister of Government Communications and Presidential Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, during a press briefing on Friday, July 18, 2025.
“In line with the President’s commitment to transparency and accountability, the Attorney-General has been directed to take legal steps to ensure the dissolution of the Board of Trustees,” Kwakye Ofosu said.
He further stated that the President has ordered the immediate publication of the full Deloitte audit report for public scrutiny. “We will put it out in various portals so that the public can have access,” he added.
The audit findings show that a total of $97 million has been spent on the National Cathedral project, which remains at a standstill. The Minister explained that while $58 million had already been acknowledged as payments made, an additional $39 million was paid to the project contractor, Sir David Adjaye and Associates.
“Contrary to the widely held view that the total spent was $58 million, the audit reveals an additional outstanding payment of $39 million to the contractor. This brings the total amount spent so far on what is essentially a hole in the ground to $97 million,” Kwakye Ofosu noted.
He also pointed out that although construction work stopped in March 2023 due to issues with the contract, the government has continued to incur extra costs related to the project.
The latest revelations have intensified public pressure on the government to justify the heavy spending on a project that has shown little visible progress, nearly seven years after its announcement.
