Ghana has officially welcomed a new United Nations Resident Coordinator, with the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, expressing both pride and optimism as the country renews its commitment to multilateral diplomacy and global development.
In a heartfelt post shared on his X (formerly Twitter) page, the Minister disclosed that he had received the open letters of His Excellency Zia Choudhury, the incoming UN Resident Coordinator to Ghana, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Ghana-UN relations.
“With great delight, I received the open letters of His Excellency Zia Choudhury,” Ablakwa stated.
The announcement comes at a symbolic moment, as the United Nations celebrates its 80th anniversary a milestone that has inspired renewed reflection on the global body’s mandate, legacy, and the path forward. Ablakwa reaffirmed Ghana’s unwavering support for the UN Charter and reiterated the country’s long-standing dedication to multilateral cooperation.
“As the UN turns 80, Ghana reaffirms its steadfast belief in the UN Charter; renews our unwavering commitment to multilateralism; and assures that we shall be consolidating our enviable role as a top 5 troop contributor to UN peacekeeping operations in theatres of conflict across the world,” the post continued.
Ghana, recognized globally as a reliable contributor to UN peacekeeping missions, has consistently ranked among the top five countries in terms of troop deployment, providing critical support to peace and security efforts in conflict zones across the globe.
In addition to peacekeeping, Ablakwa emphasized Ghana’s continued advocacy for comprehensive reforms within the United Nations, aligning with the African Union’s Ezulwini Consensus which calls for greater African representation, particularly within the UN Security Council.

“Ghana will continue to be a lead advocate for UN reforms consistent with the African Union’s Ezulwini Consensus,” he wrote.
Looking ahead, the Minister expressed Ghana’s readiness to deepen cooperation with the UN in achieving both national and global development goals, particularly within the framework of President John Dramani Mahama’s vision to “reset Ghana” and accelerate progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
“We shall strengthen our cooperation with the UN in all sectors to achieve President Mahama’s vision for resetting Ghana and achieving the SDGs,” he added.
As Ghana welcomes Mr. Choudhury into his new role, the country’s leadership has once again positioned itself as a strong voice for peace, equity, and international cooperation in the global arena.
