Ghana to Face Mexico in May Friendly Ahead of 2026 World Cup

Ghana will take on Mexico in an international friendly in May as preparations intensify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup to be staged across North America.

The high-profile encounter, scheduled for Friday, May 22, 2026, will be played at a yet-to-be-announced venue in Mexico. The match forms part of both nations’ build-up plans as they fine-tune their squads ahead of the tournament, which will be hosted by Mexico, Canada, and the United States.

Head coach  Otto Addois expected to use the friendly to further assess his options, drawing from players based in Ghana’s domestic league as well as those competing in Europe. Some U-23 players, who are also in contention for Ghana’s Olympic Games qualifiers, are likely to be given opportunities to impress.

The Mexico clash will be Ghana’s third preparatory match announced so far. The Black Stars are already set to face Austria and Germany during the next FIFA international window in March. Otto Addo and his technical team are expected to name their squad for those two friendlies in the coming days.

For Mexico, the friendly presents an opportunity to sharpen their squad before they kick off the World Cup on June 11 against South Africa in the tournament’s opening match. They will then face one of South Korea, Czech Republic, Denmark, the Republic of Ireland, or North Macedonia in their remaining Group A fixtures.

Ghana, meanwhile, will begin their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England and Croatia in the other Group L matches. With both nations eager to make a strong statement at the expanded 2026 tournament, the May showdown promises to be a valuable test ahead of football’s biggest stage.
