Ghana and India Forge Stronger Ties: New Agreements on Vaccines, Defense, Cybersecurity, and Agriculture

Ghana and India have taken a bold step to strengthen their longstanding friendship by signing a series of new agreements aimed at deepening cooperation across key sectors, including vaccine production, defense, cybersecurity, and agriculture.

The agreements were signed during Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s two-day state visit to Ghana, his first stop on a five-nation Africa tour, which will end at the BRICS summit in Brazil. The visit, which marks a significant milestone in Ghana-India relations, has been described as both historic and strategic.

President John Dramani Mahama, speaking at the signing ceremony, praised the growing partnership and described the moment as a reset for Ghana’s development path and a step forward for African democracy. He noted that the memoranda of understanding (MoUs) signed between the two countries will give fresh momentum to their shared goals.

“On the strength of the successful engagements, we have had some memoranda of understanding signed between Ghana and India to give impetus to our commitment and aspirations for sustained and enhanced cooperation,” President Mahama said.

A key highlight of the agreements is the establishment of a permanent joint commission that will oversee and guide the long-term collaboration between the two countries. The President explained that this new mechanism will enable Ghana and India to consistently explore diplomatic and economic opportunities through structured consultations and focused cooperation.

In his remarks, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking through an interpreter, assured Ghanaians of India’s full support in Ghana’s economic recovery and transformation efforts. “Today, we have decided to double the ITEC and ICCR scholarships for Ghana. Work will also begin to establish a school development center to provide vocational training for the youth,” Prime Minister Modi announced.

The Indian Prime Minister also expressed India’s willingness to contribute to President Mahama’s ambitious Feed Ghanaprogram by providing agricultural support and technical expertise.

Health was another major focus, with Prime Minister Modi revealing plans to introduce Jan Aushadhi centers in Ghana to make affordable and reliable healthcare accessible to citizens. He emphasized the importance of cooperation in vaccine production to strengthen both countries’ capacities to respond to future health challenges.

In the area of security, Prime Minister Modi underscored the need for joint efforts, guided by what he called “security through solidarity.” India committed to assisting Ghana in military training, maritime security, defense supplies, and cybersecurity.

To crown the visit, Ghana conferred its highest state honor on Prime Minister Modi on July 2, recognizing his contributions to strengthening Ghana-India relations and his support for African development.

The agreements signed during this visit set a promising tone for the future of Ghana-India cooperation, opening new doors for growth, innovation, and shared prosperity. Both leaders expressed optimism that this partnership will not only benefit their respective countries but also contribute positively to the broader African and global community.
