Cameroon’s President Biya names son Vice-President amid succession debate

Cameroon has entered a new phase in its political journey after President Paul Biya appointed his son, Franck Emmanuel Biya, as Vice-President  a role revived for the first time in over five decades.

The reintroduction of the Vice-President position, which has not existed since 1972, comes with sweeping constitutional powers. Under the new arrangement, the Vice-President is next in line to take over leadership automatically in the event of the president’s death, resignation, or incapacity.

For many observers, the move goes beyond administrative restructuring. It is being interpreted as a deliberate step by the 93-year-old leader to shape Cameroon’s political succession. Having been in power since 1982, Biya  currently the world’s oldest serving head of state  appears to have placed his son firmly at the centre of the country’s future leadership.

Franck Biya’s influence is also said to extend beyond his new title. Reports suggest he has been entrusted with key responsibilities within the defence structure, a development that further consolidates his presence across both political and security institutions.

Supporters of the decision argue that it provides a sense of continuity at a time when Cameroon is navigating internal and regional pressures. To them, a controlled transition could help maintain stability in an uncertain period.

However, critics see it differently. They warn that concentrating power within a single family risks undermining democratic institutions and could set a troubling precedent for dynastic politics in the country. Concerns are growing that such a move may weaken institutional independence and limit political competition in the long run.

As the debate unfolds, the appointment of Franck Biya has not only reshaped Cameroon’s political structure but also reignited broader questions about governance, leadership transition, and the future of democracy in the Central African nation.
