Member of Parliament for Abetifi and former Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Bryan Acheampong, has boldly announced his intentions to contest for leadership within the New Patriotic Party (NPP), setting his sights on the presidency in the 2028 general elections.
Speaking at the NPP Constituency Chairmen Caucus Conference held in Kumasi on Saturday, Dr Acheampong made his ambitions unmistakably clear. “I’m not here to test the waters. I’m here for power,” he declared to resounding applause from party delegates and grassroots supporters.
Dr Acheampong emphasized the importance of unity within the party, calling on both leadership and grassroots members to rally behind a shared vision to reclaim power in the next election cycle. “This is the beginning of a focused and strategic effort to return the NPP to power,” he said, urging the party to build a strong, cohesive front.
His message struck a chord with many in attendance, with one constituency chairman stating, “This is not just about Bryan. It’s about building strength together as a party.”
Reflecting on his extensive political career, Dr Acheampong highlighted his deep roots in the party, from his days in grassroots mobilisation to his roles as a Member of Parliament and Cabinet Minister. He argued that his years of service and experience have prepared him to lead the NPP into what he called “a new era.”
While the NPP’s official flagbearer contest is scheduled for January 31, 2026, Dr Acheampong’s powerful appearance and declaration at the Kumasi conference are widely seen as the formal launch of his leadership bid.
His candidacy adds a new dynamic to the party’s internal politics, signaling an early start to what promises to be an intense race for the NPP’s next presidential hopeful.
