Bawumia Pledges Grassroots Inclusion as He Seeks NPP Flagbearership

Former Vice President and New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer aspirant, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has called on party delegates to unite behind his leadership to rebuild a stronger and more inclusive NPP.

In a Facebook post ahead of Saturday’s Presidential Primaries, Dr. Bawumia said his victory would represent a collective win for party members and signal the start of a renewed effort to reposition the NPP for electoral success and effective governance.

“A win for me on Saturday will be a win for all members of our great party,” he wrote, adding that it would mark “the beginning of rebuilding the party capable of winning to serve the country.”

Dr. Bawumia appealed to delegates to support his vision, stating: “Let’s win together on 31st January for a greater NPP for all, which will win and be of immense service to Ghana again.”

He used the post to acknowledge the sacrifices and dedication of party members across the country, particularly those at the grassroots, while expressing concern that their efforts are often overlooked.

Drawing on his long years of engagement with the party, Dr. Bawumia said he understands the crucial role grassroots members play in the party’s success.

“Having toured and campaigned in all constituencies – at least six times in each – for the past five general elections, spanning 18 years, I am well placed to understand the immense contributions our party faithful can make towards the revival and success of our party when they are better acknowledged, appreciated and rewarded,” he stated.

He noted that addressing neglect and exclusion within the party would be a key priority under his leadership. To this end, he has proposed a number of measures aimed at improving recognition, inclusion and welfare, especially at the local level.

Among his proposals is the creation of a comprehensive digital database for party members at all levels. The system would allow members to be formally registered, their contributions acknowledged, and their welfare concerns documented and addressed through a structured monitoring process linking constituency-level units to a central office.

Dr. Bawumia also outlined plans to decentralise appointments in a future NPP government, proposing that each constituency be allowed to nominate at least ten qualified and deserving members for appointments, with the aim of strengthening local participation and development.

In addition, he proposed the introduction of a constituency-based national budget to ensure equitable development across the country. According to him, this approach would guarantee that “no constituency is left behind in national development.”

Reaffirming his commitment to these initiatives, Dr. Bawumia said the proposals are designed to tackle “the thorny issue of exclusion, and the perennial welfare concerns of our committed members.”
