Amin Adam Slams NDC Over ‘Showmanship’ in Energy Sector Debt Payment

Former Finance Minister and Member of Parliament for Karaga, Dr Mohammed Amin Adam, has criticised the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) for what he describes as excessive public relations over routine fiscal responsibilities, particularly the recent payment of energy sector debts.

Dr Amin Adam took issue with the government’s announcement of a US$1.4 billion payment towards clearing energy sector obligations, arguing that the move is being presented as an extraordinary achievement when it is, in fact, a normal part of public financial management. According to him, such payments are not new and should not be treated as a landmark intervention unique to the current administration.

“The NDC government does PR with everything. Paying energy sector debts of $1.4 billion is not new,” he stated, adding that governments routinely make such payments to keep the energy sector functional and stable.

The former Finance Minister further insisted that the narrative being promoted by the NDC does not align with official records. He pointed out that documents produced by the current government itself acknowledge similar payments made under the previous administration.

“As captured in the 2025 Budget presented by the NDC government, the previous NPP government paid $1.4 billion of the energy sector debts in 2024 without making noise about it,” Dr Amin Adam noted. He stressed that these facts are clearly documented in budget statements laid before Parliament and are available for public scrutiny.

According to him, paying down energy sector debt should be viewed as a responsibility of government rather than an achievement deserving political celebration. He cautioned against what he sees as attempts to score political points over actions that are expected as part of prudent economic governance.
