ADB Boss Endorses Government’s “Feed Ghana” Initiative, Promises Strong Support

The Managing Director of the Agricultural Development Bank (ADB) PLC, Edward Ato Sarpong, has thrown his full weight behind the government’s ambitious “Feed Ghana” initiative, calling it a bold step toward transforming Ghana’s agricultural landscape and tackling youth unemployment.

Speaking at a recent engagement, Mr. Ato Sarpong described the initiative as a “transformative intervention” that holds the potential to boost agricultural productivity, create sustainable jobs, and drive industrial growth. “Feed Ghana is precisely the type of initiative that will motivate us to innovate, make more deliberate investments, and accompany farmers, processors, and agri-SMEs on their path to growth and expansion,” he said.

The Feed Ghana programme, rolled out by the Ministry of Food and Agriculture (MoFA), is a cornerstone of the government’s renewed efforts to enhance food security and scale up agro-industrialization. It aims to expand local production of key crops and livestock, ensure a steady supply of raw materials for industry, and reduce the country’s reliance on imports. It also targets the creation of thousands of jobs for the youth and emerging agripreneurs.

Mr. Ato Sarpong emphasized that the programme aligns seamlessly with ADB’s mission of financing national development through strategic investment in agriculture. “The initiative aligns with ADB’s new tagline Beyond Banking…, which reflects the Bank’s unwavering commitment to delivering added value that reaches beyond traditional financial services,” he noted.

He assured that ADB is fully prepared to partner with the government and MoFA in supporting projects under the programme. Key focus areas include Grains and Legumes Development, Smart Agriculture, the Vegetable Development Project, Institutional Farming, the Poultry Sector Initiative, Livestock Development, the Cocoa Industry Project, Cotton Production Expansion, and Oil Palm Industry Development.

“I strongly believe that the programme will strengthen the agric value chain by ensuring that agricultural produce is efficiently processed into food products and industrial inputs, help reduce post-harvest losses, and enhance food security in Ghana,” he added.

As part of its repositioning efforts, ADB is designing new financing schemes, offering tailored support for agribusinesses, and providing advisory and capacity-building services to players within the agricultural value chain.

“We are already exploring new financing schemes and collaborations that will enable us meet the unique needs of agribusinesses under the Feed Ghana programme,” Mr. Sarpong stated.

The Agricultural Development Bank has also reaffirmed its commitment to delivering innovative banking solutions. Under its new brand promise Beyond Banking…, the bank is focusing on deepening customer relationships, enhancing user experience, and building strategic partnerships that support Ghana’s development agenda.

In championing Feed Ghana, ADB positions itself not just as a lender, but as a critical player in Ghana’s agricultural transformation story.
