Accra Roads to Close for State Funeral of Military Helicopter Crash Victims.

The Ghana Police Service has announced the temporary closure and diversion of selected roads in Accra to ensure public safety and smooth traffic flow during the Inter-Denominational and Inter-Faith State Funeral for the victims of the recent military helicopter crash. The solemn event will take place at the Black Star Square on Friday, 15 August 2025, and is expected to draw large crowds, including dignitaries, religious leaders, security personnel, and families of the deceased.

According to the Police, “in order to ensure public safety and smooth traffic management” on the day, certain key routes around the venue will be inaccessible to motorists. Roads to be closed include the 28th February Road from the CEPS Traffic Light Intersection to the Castle Road Junction, the Osu Cemetery Traffic Light on Lokko Street, Castle Road from the AU area to the Osu Cemetery Traffic Light, and Starlet 91 Road at the Ministries Traffic Light Intersection.

Traffic diversions have been mapped out to redirect motorists and minimise congestion. Vehicles from La, Labone, and Osu heading towards the Accra Central Business District and Ministries will be rerouted onto Salem Avenue Road at the Castle Traffic Light to link up with Oxford Street. Motorists from Lokko Street in Osu towards Castle Road are advised to take Ajumaku Street and join Oxford Street instead. Those coming from the John Evans Atta Mills High Street towards Black Star Square will be diverted onto Liberia Road at the CEPS Traffic Intersection, leading them to the National Theatre Traffic Light Intersection. Additionally, traffic from the AU Circle towards Castle Road through the Osu Cemetery Traffic Light will be redirected onto Abdul Diouf and King Hassan Roads to connect with Abdul Nasser Road in front of the Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ).

The Police urged the public to cooperate fully with the arrangements, noting that the measures are intended to maintain order and respect during the national event. “These temporary arrangements are aimed at ensuring a dignified and peaceful atmosphere for the State Funeral,” the statement read. “We call on all road users to be patient, adhere to the diversions, and help create a safe environment as the nation comes together to honour the fallen.”

The funeral marks a moment of national mourning for the victims of the tragic helicopter crash, as Ghanaians unite to pay their final respects.
