President John Dramani Mahama has urged churches to translate faith into practical service by promoting integrity, compassion, responsible citizenship and peace in society.
He made the call on Thursday, October 15, when delivering the keynote address at the opening of the 10th Triennial Congress of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship in Accra. The President highlighted the Church’s role in shaping public life and supporting vulnerable members of society.
The three-day congress, being held in Africa for the first time in the 115-year history of Assemblies of God worldwide, has attracted more than 10,000 participants from across the globe. It is being held under the theme, “Commissioned: One Mandate, Every Nation.”
Ahead of the event, the Executive Committee of the World Assemblies of God Fellowship paid a courtesy call on President Mahama. The delegation was led by the Fellowship’s Global Chairman, Rev. Dominic Yeo, and the General Superintendent of Assemblies of God, Ghana, Rev. Stephen Yenusom Wengam.
Rev. Wengam expressed appreciation to the President and his government for supporting the organisation of the congress, describing the event as a significant milestone for the church in Africa.
He also explained that the morning conference, initially scheduled for Independence Square, had been moved to the Grand Arena of the Accra International Conference Centre due to technical challenges. He said the new venue offered a more suitable environment for the programme.
Rev. Yeo congratulated Ghana on becoming the first African country to host the World Congress, drawing a parallel with the country’s position as the first in sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence.
He thanked President Mahama and the government for their support towards ensuring the success of the gathering, while commending the President’s leadership, which he said was reflected in economic stability and extensive road development.
The Global Chairman also encouraged President Mahama to continue representing Christ in public office and to remain steadfast in his faith.
