Seven illegal miners have been confirmed dead after a mining pit collapsed at Asaman Tamfoe in the Atewa East District of the Eastern Region.
Four others are still believed to be trapped underground as rescue efforts continue following the incident on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
The tragedy reportedly occurred at about 11:00 p.m. while 11 miners were working inside the pit in search of gold.
Two miners who were outside the pit when it collapsed reportedly rushed to the community to seek help.
Residents subsequently mobilised to begin rescue efforts and alerted the Police and other emergency agencies.
Rescuers worked through the night and have so far retrieved the bodies of seven miners from beneath the debris.
Five of the deceased have reportedly been identified as residents of Moseaso, while the remaining two are said to be residents of Asaman Tamfoe.
Personnel from the Anyinam District Police Command, the Ghana National Ambulance Service, the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and community volunteers are currently at the scene.
Rescue teams are continuing efforts to reach the remaining four miners, who are feared trapped beneath the collapsed pit.
