The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has formally notified Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin of the appointment of Builsa North MP James Agalga as the new Majority Leader.
The notification, contained in a letter dated Monday, August 24, 2026, and signed by NDC General Secretary Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, follows consultations between the party leadership and the Presidency.
In the letter, Mr Kwetey said Mr Agalga’s appointment takes immediate effect and is intended to provide leadership and coordination for the NDC Majority Caucus in Parliament.
“Hon. James Agalga, Member of Parliament for Builsa North Constituency, has been appointed as the new Majority Leader of the Parliament of the Republic of Ghana,” the letter stated.
Mr Kwetey expressed confidence that Mr Agalga would work with the Speaker and other MPs to advance the business of Parliament and serve the interests of the country.
The formal communication comes a day after Speaker Alban Bagbin raised concerns about the procedure used to announce Mr Agalga’s appointment.
President John Dramani Mahama had earlier announced Mr Agalga as the new Majority Leader, replacing Mahama Ayariga, who is expected to assume a new role in government.
However, Speaker Bagbin said the President could not formally communicate a change in the leadership of a parliamentary caucus to the Speaker.
He explained that Parliament’s Standing Orders require such a change to be communicated by the General Secretary of the political party concerned.
The Speaker said the Majority Leader is a Member of Parliament “designated by the Majority Caucus as its leader in the House.”
With the NDC’s formal notification now submitted, Mr Agalga’s appointment has been communicated to Parliament through the procedure outlined by the Speaker.
