AMA Bans Aboboyaa From Using Inner Lanes on Accra Roads

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has banned commercial tricycle operators, popularly known as Aboboyaa, from using the inner lanes of roads across the capital.

The directive is part of measures by the Assembly to improve road safety and reduce accidents involving tricycles.

Speaking to journalists, Accra Mayor Michael Kpakpo Allotey said Aboboyaa operators must use designated side roads whenever they are available.

He explained that where no side road exists, tricycles must remain on the outer lane and be fitted with reflector stickers to make them more visible to other road users.

The Mayor has also directed operators to wear reflective clothing, particularly at night, to improve visibility and reduce the risk of accidents.

The AMA has given Aboboyaa operators until the end of August 2026 to install the required reflector stickers on their vehicles. Operators who fail to comply will face sanctions when enforcement begins.

The Assembly is urging all tricycle operators to comply with the new rules as part of efforts to make Accra’s roads safer for everyone.
