Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang says her working relationship with President John Dramani Mahama has been built on mutual trust, shared goals and a common commitment to delivering on the government’s development agenda.
According to her, there is little reason for major disagreements between the two leaders because they are both working towards the commitments outlined in the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s manifesto, which was presented to Ghanaians during the election campaign.
Speaking on the KSM Show on Friday, August 7, 2026, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said the government’s priority was to build the country and address the needs of Ghanaians rather than create unnecessary tensions within its leadership.
“What are we doing together? That’s a fundamental question. We are here because we have a manifesto. We did the campaign. The people of Ghana listened to us. They were very merciful to us,” she said.
She explained that because the government already had a clear strategy and agreed objectives, there was little basis for fundamental disagreement between her and the President.
“We have a strategy. So what is there to fundamentally disagree about? To begin with, the issue is we are building the nation,” she said.
The Vice President also acknowledged the enormous responsibilities that come with the presidency, saying President Mahama faces pressures and sees issues that may not always be apparent to others in government.
“He will see more than we would see. He’ll face more pressures than we would. So you try to defer as much as you can,” she explained.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said her confidence in the President stems from knowing him well and trusting that his decisions would remain within the objectives they had collectively agreed to pursue.
“You know that he’s not going to do anything away from the agreed objectives. You know him enough, you trust him enough, and he demonstrates that enough,” she said.
She added that her role as Vice President was primarily to support the President in delivering on their shared agenda.
“So my job is to support him. He’s not going to ask you to go and jump into the sea or anything like that,” she said.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang described the relationship between the two leaders as a positive one and expressed gratitude for the cooperation they have enjoyed so far.
“So far, so good. And I’m very, very thankful. I’m very, very thankful that we have such a good working relationship,” she said.
