President John Dramani Mahama has expressed confidence that the Dagbon Kingdom will witness a peaceful and orderly succession process following the death of the Overlord of Dagbon, His Royal Majesty Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II.
The President said the late Ya-Na left behind a strong foundation of unity, reconciliation and institutional stability that would guide the kingdom through the transition period.
President Mahama made the remarks when a delegation from the Dagbon Traditional Council and the Northern Regional House of Chiefs visited the Presidency to formally inform him of the passing of the revered traditional ruler, who died on July 16.
According to the President, Ya-Na Abukari II’s reign was marked by a commitment to rebuilding trust and strengthening traditional institutions after years of divisions within Dagbon.
He highlighted the unanimous adoption of the Dagbon Constitution as one of the late king’s greatest achievements, describing it as a significant framework that would continue to provide direction for governance, succession and stability in the kingdom.
“I’m positive that he has laid the foundation for a smooth succession in Dagbon. I wish to assure the chiefs and people of Dagbon that government is standing in full solidarity with you during this period of mourning,” President Mahama said.
He added that government would work closely with the Dagbon Traditional Council to ensure that the necessary state support and courtesies were provided as preparations begin for the final funeral rites of the late Ya-Na.
President Mahama praised Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II for helping transform Dagbon into a symbol of peace and reconciliation through his patience, humility and dedication to unity.
He assured the chiefs and people of Dagbon that government would remain engaged with traditional authorities throughout the mourning period and support efforts to honour the late king’s legacy.
