British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation as leader of the Labour Party and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, bringing an abrupt end to his leadership following mounting pressure from within his own party.
In a speech delivered on Monday, June 22, Starmer said he had accepted the judgment of Labour MPs who increasingly questioned whether he remained the best person to lead the party into the next general election.
“The debate about whether I am the right person to lead Labour back to power has been settled. The question now is whether I am the right person to lead the party into the next election,” Starmer said. “I have heard the answer of my parliamentary party to that question, and I accept that answer with good grace.”
Starmer stressed that throughout his time in office, his decisions had been guided by what he believed was in the best interest of the country.
“Every decision I have taken has been about putting the country I love first,” he stated.
The outgoing prime minister revealed that he had informed King Charles III of his decision and would begin the process of selecting a new Labour leader.
“I have spoken to His Majesty the King this morning to inform him of my decision,” he said.
According to Starmer, the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee will be asked to set a timetable for the leadership race, with nominations expected to open on July 9 and conclude before Parliament breaks for its summer recess.
His resignation comes less than two years after leading Labour to a commanding election victory that ended 14 years of Conservative Party rule.
The decision follows months of declining popularity and growing unrest within Labour, where senior figures and MPs reportedly raised concerns about the party’s prospects under his leadership.
Starmer’s departure now opens the door for a closely watched leadership contest that will determine both Labour’s next leader and the individual likely to become Britain’s next prime minister. Potential candidates are expected to emerge in the coming weeks as the party begins the process of choosing its new leader.
