“6pm to 6am Curfew Imposed on Bawku Amid Rising Security Concerns”

The Ministry for the Interior has announced a revision to the curfew hours in Bawku Municipality and its surrounding areas in the Upper East Region. Effective Thursday, July 31, 2025, residents in the area will now observe a curfew from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

The decision, made on the advice of the National Security Council and enacted through an Executive Instrument, is part of ongoing efforts to stabilize the area and curb rising tensions.

In a statement signed by Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Ministry appealed to the people of Bawku to remain calm and work collectively toward peace.

“Government calls on the Chiefs, Elders, Opinion Leaders, Youth, and people of the area to exercise restraint in the face of the challenges confronting them,” the statement read. It further encouraged residents to seek non-violent channels in addressing their grievances and fostering development.

“…use non-violent means to channel their energies into ensuring peace,” it added.

In a separate but related directive, the Ministry reiterated a total ban on the possession of weapons in the area.

“There is a total ban on all persons in the Bawku Municipality and its environs from carrying arms, ammunition, or any offensive weapons,” the statement warned. The public was reminded that anyone found violating this directive would face arrest and prosecution.

Bawku has experienced sporadic violence in recent years, often fueled by deep-rooted ethnic tensions and land disputes. Authorities continue to monitor the security situation closely, and the government has stressed its commitment to restoring lasting peace in the area.

Residents are being urged to cooperate with security agencies and community leaders to prevent further escalation and support reconciliation efforts.
