The Member of Parliament (MP) for Ningo-Prampram, Sam George, has described any attempt to recall Parliament ahead of the December elections as an “exercise in futility.”
Parliament was indefinitely adjourned by Speaker Alban Bagbin following the controversy surrounding vacant parliamentary seats, which was recently resolved by a Supreme Court ruling. The court declared Speaker Bagbin’s decision to declare four seats vacant unconstitutional, prompting expectations of a parliamentary recall.
Speaking on TV3’s Key Points program on November 16, Sam George emphasized that National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs are focused on campaigning in their respective constituencies and will not honor any recall until after December 11, when election-related activities have concluded.
“Any attempt to recall us will be an exercise in futility. We won’t come. We will return after the elections so Parliament can be recalled after December 11,” he stated.
In a related development, Johnson Asiedu Nketia, National Chairman of the NDC, has directed the party’s MPs to boycott any emergency recall of Parliament. Speaking during a campaign event at Asasetre in the Ellembelle constituency, he reaffirmed the party’s commitment to protecting Ghana’s democracy and institutions.
“The NDC will not permit a select few to undermine Ghana’s democratic foundations. No government business will collapse because of Parliament’s current situation. Therefore, I urge NDC members of Parliament to boycott any emergency recall,” he said.
The directive comes amidst concerns raised by some stakeholders over the potential implications of Parliament’s inability to convene on government business.
