UPSA Names New Hostel After Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh for Contributions to Education

The University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), has honoured Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) running mate for the 2024 elections, by naming its newly constructed hostel after him. This recognition highlights his transformative impact on Ghana’s education sector, particularly during his tenure as Minister for Education.

The ceremony, held on UPSA’s campus, acknowledged Dr. Prempeh’s instrumental role in supporting infrastructure development at tertiary institutions. The facility, now named the Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh Hostel, is a state-of-the-art building designed to address the university’s accommodation challenges, housing over 5,000 students.

Leadership in Education

Dr. Kofi Ohene Konadu, Chairman of the UPSA University Council, praised Dr. Prempeh’s commitment to expanding educational access and improving learning environments.

“Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh’s tenure as Minister for Education was marked by a relentless commitment to expanding access to education and creating an enabling environment for learning. This hostel stands as a testament to his dedication to improving infrastructure for tertiary education,” Dr. Konadu remarked.

The Vice Chancellor of UPSA, Professor Abednego Feehi Okoe Amartey, further commended Dr. Prempeh’s lasting contributions, particularly his leadership in implementing the Free Senior High School policy and advancing tertiary education infrastructure.

“Dr. Prempeh’s impact on Ghana’s education is indelible. Naming this hostel after him is our way of immortalizing his contributions,” said Professor Amartey.

A Legacy of Commitment

Dr. Prempeh expressed his gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the collective effort required to advance education.

“This honour is not just mine but for all who believe in the power of education to transform lives. I remain committed to supporting the growth of institutions like UPSA, which are pivotal to our national development,” he stated.

The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, faculty, students, and representatives from various educational bodies, further solidifying the importance of leadership in driving educational transformation.

This recognition follows UPSA’s earlier conferral of an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree on Dr. Prempeh in 2021, celebrating his remarkable leadership in the education sector.

The Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh Hostel symbolizes UPSA’s appreciation for leaders who champion education and sets a precedent for recognizing impactful contributions to national development.
