Global internet sensation popularly known as Speed has been warmly welcomed to Ghana with a traditional Akan naming ceremony held in the Eastern Region on Monday.
The culturally rich event, steeped in royal pageantry and symbolism, saw the streamer formally inducted into Akan tradition, where he was given the name Barima Kofi Akuffo. The ceremony was organised by local chiefs and elders and drew a large gathering of community members, creating a vibrant atmosphere filled with colour, music and celebration.
Dressed in specially prepared traditional cloth, Speed fully embraced the moment, joining in the festivities with visible excitement. He danced enthusiastically to the rhythmic sounds of fontomfrom drums, greeted elders respectfully, and exchanged smiles with cheering spectators, clearly moved by the warmth of the reception.
One of the highlights of the ceremony was his formal introduction to the King, marking the peak of the cultural rites and symbolising his acceptance into the community.
The name Barima Kofi Akuffo carries deep cultural meaning within Akan tradition. “Barima” represents bravery, strength and nobility, often associated with a warrior or hero. “Kofi” signifies that he is symbolically considered to be born on a Friday, a day associated with peace and fertility, while “Akuffo” is a respected Akan family name.
Together, the name reflects courage, resilience and a lasting cultural bond between Speed and the Ghanaian community, making the ceremony a memorable moment in his visit to the country.
