Tension is mounting across African football after the Government of Senegal fiercely rejected the decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to strip its national team of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title and award it to Morocco.
In a strongly worded statement issued from Dakar, authorities described the ruling as shocking, unjust, and deeply damaging to the spirit of sport, insisting that victory should be decided on the field — not in boardrooms.
“This decision runs counter to the cardinal principles that underpin sports ethics… fairness, loyalty and respect for the outcome decided on the field of play.”
Officials argue that the match was completed according to the rules and that overturning the result through administrative action undermines both the competition and the trust millions of Africans place in continental football bodies.
The government did not hold back in its criticism, calling the ruling a serious error that could tarnish CAF’s reputation.
“By negating the result of a game duly completed and won… CAF is seriously jeopardizing its own credibility and African peoples’ legitimate trust.”
Dakar made it clear that it will not accept what it views as an unjust dispossession of a hard-earned victory. Authorities emphasized that the team’s effort, discipline, and performance cannot simply be erased by paperwork.
“Senegal will not allow an administrative decision to wipe off commitment, merit and sporting excellence.”
Beyond rejecting the verdict, the government has taken a more aggressive stance, demanding an independent international investigation into suspected corruption within CAF’s leadership. It also confirmed plans to pursue legal action through appropriate global institutions to restore what it believes is the rightful outcome.
At the same time, officials expressed solidarity with Senegalese citizens reportedly detained in Morocco following disturbances linked to the final, assuring families that the government is actively working to resolve the situation.
Reaffirming national unity behind the team, the statement concluded with a firm message: Senegal will remain “determined, vigilant and unwavering” until justice is done and the honor of its football is restored
The controversy now threatens to grow beyond sport, potentially becoming one of the most serious disputes in African football history.
