Ofori-Atta Pursues U.S. Residency as Corruption Case and Extradition Efforts Intensify

Former Ghanaian Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta has reportedly begun the process of seeking permanent residency in the United States, even as legal pressure mounts over corruption allegations in Ghana.

His lawyers say he is following a lawful “pathway to residency” and intends to remain in the U.S. through official immigration procedures. Lead counsel Enayat Qasimi disclosed this to U.S.-based news outlet Semafor, emphasizing that his client has legitimate options under American immigration law.

Ofori-Atta is facing multiple charges in Ghana, including corruption, money laundering, and abuse of public office for personal gain. A major aspect of the case involves allegations that a contract awarded to Strategic Mobilisation Limited (SML) caused financial losses of more than GH¢1.4 billion to the state.

The former minister is currently being held at a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention facility in Virginia after his arrest in January by immigration officials for allegedly overstaying his visa.

Meanwhile, Ghana’s Attorney-General has issued an extradition request that could compel his return to face trial. However, his legal team argues that there are serious concerns about the independence of Ghana’s judiciary and claims the case is politically motivated, raising doubts about whether he would receive a fair trial.

Ofori-Atta served as Finance Minister from 2017 to 2024 and was a central figure in Ghana’s economic management during that period. His lawyers maintain that the accusations of financial impropriety are unfounded and part of what they describe as a political witch hunt.

The outcome of the U.S. residency process and the extradition request will ultimately determine whether he remains in the United States or returns to Ghana to answer the charges in court.
