NDC Majority Caucus Demands Fresh Ayawaso East Primaries, Sanctions for Vote Buying

The Majority Caucus of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) in Parliament has called for the immediate cancellation of the party’s parliamentary primaries held in the Ayawaso East Constituency, following widespread allegations of vote buying.

In a statement issued after what it described as “extensive deliberations,” the Caucus said it had taken note of the serious allegations circulating in the public domain concerning inducement and other unethical practices during the just-ended primary in the Greater Accra Region.

The lawmakers did not mince words in condemning the situation, stressing that the reported conduct runs counter to the party’s broader political reform agenda.

“The Caucus wishes to strongly condemn these developments against the background of the agenda to reset the politics of this country,” the statement said.

According to the Majority Caucus, discussions on the matter involved both the core leadership and the extended leadership of the group. Following these engagements, the Caucus resolved to formally communicate its position to the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the NDC.

Top among its demands is the annulment of the Ayawaso East parliamentary primary.

“That the primary of the NDC organised in the Ayawaso East Constituency be annulled immediately,” the Caucus resolved.

Beyond calling for a fresh election, the Majority Caucus is also pushing for firm sanctions against any individual found culpable. It wants candidates who are proven to have engaged in vote buying or inducement barred from contesting in any re-run primary.

“Any candidate who participated in the said primary and has been established to have engaged in this unethical conduct must be banned from participating in the subsequent primary after annulment,” the statement added.

The Caucus concluded by reaffirming its commitment to ethical politics and internal democracy within the party, noting that restoring public trust remains non-negotiable.

“The NDC Majority Caucus remains committed to restoring integrity to our politics,” it stressed.

The Functional Executive Committee is yet to officially respond to the demands, but the development adds to growing pressure within the party to decisively address allegations of vote buying ahead of future internal contests.
