The Amasaman High Court has today, February 5, reduced the 15-year prison sentence imposed on controversial evangelist Nana Agradaa to 12 calendar months, ruling that the original punishment was harsh and excessive.
In its decision delivered today, the court upheld Nana Agradaa’s conviction but exercised its discretion to vary the sentence, cutting it down from the 15 years of hard labour earlier handed down by the trial court.
The revised sentence takes effect from July 3, 2025 the date of her conviction meaning Nana Agradaa will serve a total of one year in prison.
According to the court, while the offences for which she was convicted deserved punishment, the severity of the initial sentence was disproportionate under the circumstances, warranting a downward adjustment.
Nana Agradaa, a former fetish priestess turned evangelist, was convicted of charlatanic advertisement and defrauding by false pretence. The conviction stemmed from a 2022 televised broadcast in which she claimed to possess spiritual powers capable of doubling money.
During the broadcast, she allegedly lured several individuals to part with large sums of money after promising miraculous financial returns. These promises, however, were never fulfilled, leading to complaints and her eventual prosecution.
The High Court’s ruling today brings a significant reduction in her sentence while maintaining the conviction for the offences committed.
