Trading on the Ghana Stock Exchange (GSE) closed on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, with market activity once again dominated by a single heavyweight stock, highlighting the continued concentration of liquidity on the bourse.
A total of 7.16 million shares were traded during the session, with a combined market value of GH¢39.73 million. However, much of this activity was driven by MTN Ghana, which accounted for the overwhelming majority of both volume and value traded.
MTN Ghana recorded trades of 6.47 million shares valued at GH¢34.52 million, firmly positioning it as the market’s main driver for the day. Despite this strong turnover, the stock edged lower in price, closing at GH¢5.32, down from GH¢5.40 in the previous session.
Beyond MTN, a few stocks posted modest gains. Clydestone (Ghana) PLC emerged as the top performer, climbing by GH¢0.09 to close at GH¢1.08. Cal Bank and Ghana Oil Company (GOIL) also registered slight increases, each gaining GH¢0.01 to close at GH¢0.70 and GH¢7.85 respectively.
On the losing side, GCB Bank recorded the steepest decline, dropping by GH¢2.70 to close at GH¢24.36. SIC Insurance Company followed with a fall of GH¢0.22 to GH¢3.08, while Ecobank Transnational Incorporated (ETI) dipped marginally by GH¢0.01 to GH¢1.48. MTN Ghana also featured among the decliners, shedding GH¢0.08.
In terms of trading volumes outside MTN, GOIL led with 107,593 shares traded, valued at GH¢843,805.77. Cal Bank followed with 103,336 shares worth GH¢71,889.55, while GCB Bank recorded 102,301 shares valued at GH¢2.49 million. Benso Oil Palm Plantation also saw notable activity, with 7,016 shares traded at a value of GH¢701,600.
Despite these movements, the broader market remained relatively subdued, with many listed equities recording no trades. This continues to reflect the limited depth of the exchange, where a handful of stocks particularly in the telecom, banking, and energy sectors continue to shape overall market activity.
As trading resumes on Thursday, April 2, investors will be watching closely to see whether activity broadens across more counters or remains concentrated in the same few liquid stocks.
