Mauritius Becomes First African Country to Adopt IMF’s Highest Data Transparency Standard

Mauritius has made history as the first country in Africa to adopt the International Monetary Fund’s Special Data Dissemination Standard Plus (SDDS Plus), the institution’s most advanced framework for economic data reporting.

The milestone places the island nation among a select group of countries worldwide committed to the highest level of transparency in publishing economic and financial statistics. With this step, Mauritius becomes the 32nd country globally to meet the strict requirements under the IMF’s Data Standards Initiatives.

SDDS Plus demands the regular release of comprehensive, timely, and reliable data on key areas of the economy and the financial sector. Such information is crucial for policymakers, investors, and international partners seeking a clear picture of a country’s economic health and risks.

The IMF says improved data transparency helps financial markets function more efficiently, strengthens economic policymaking, and promotes public accountability by enabling more informed analysis of government decisions and economic trends.

Mauritius previously adhered to the standard Special Data Dissemination Standard (SDDS). Under the upgraded SDDS Plus framework, the country will now publish additional datasets on a consistent basis. These include the Other Financial Corporations Survey, Financial Soundness Indicators, the Coordinated Portfolio Investment Survey, and the Coordinated Direct Investment Survey.

In addition, Mauritius will provide more detailed and granular data for categories it already reported under the earlier standard, further enhancing the depth and usefulness of its economic statistics.

Analysts believe the development could strengthen investor confidence and reinforce Mauritius’s reputation as one of Africa’s most transparent and well-managed economies. It may also encourage other countries across the continent to upgrade their own data reporting systems in line with global best practices.
