The Ministry of the Interior has announced that Friday, March 6, 2026, will be observed nationwide as a statutory public holiday in celebration of Ghana’s Independence Day.
In a notice posted on its official Facebook page on Monday, March 2, the Ministry reminded the public to recognise and observe the day across all regions, in line with national law on public holidays. The announcement was signed by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak (MP).
Independence Day commemorates Ghana’s historic attainment of self-rule from British colonial administration on March 6, 1957, making the country the first in sub-Saharan Africa to gain independence.
The day is traditionally marked with national parades, official ceremonies, and reflections on Ghana’s democratic journey and socio-economic progress. Citizens, institutions, and businesses are expected to observe the holiday according to established regulations governing statutory public holidays.
