Manchester United boosted their hopes of securing a UEFA Champions League place with an emphatic 3–1 victory over Aston Villa at Old Trafford, while Liverpool suffered a frustrating blow after conceding a late equaliser at home to Tottenham Hotspur.
United showed patience before taking control in the second half to move to 54 points after 30 matches, strengthening their hold on third place. The win also put them three points clear of fourth-placed Aston Villa, who have now lost three consecutive league games.
Casemiro opened the scoring in the 53rd minute, rising highest to nod home Bruno Fernandes’ corner. Villa responded quickly through Ross Barkley, whose powerful strike from the edge of the box brought the visitors level in the 64th minute.
United, however, refused to settle for a draw. Matheus Cunha restored their lead in the 71st minute with a composed finish, before substitute Benjamin Šeško sealed the victory ten minutes later with a clinical strike.
Fernandes also reached a remarkable milestone, registering his 100th assist for the club in all competitions. With eight matches remaining, he is now just four assists away from matching the Premier League single-season record of 20, held by Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
At Anfield, Liverpool appeared on course for a crucial win when Dominik Szoboszlai curled in a superb free kick in the 18th minute. But their persistent defensive lapses resurfaced as Richarlison struck in the 90th minute to earn Tottenham a 1–1 draw.
The result leaves Liverpool in fifth place on 49 points, still within touching distance of the top four but increasingly under pressure. It also marked the eighth time this season they have conceded late goals, a worrying pattern that has cost them valuable points.
Manager Arne Slot admitted his disappointment after the match, acknowledging that his side has conceded too many goals to collect the results expected of a club of Liverpool’s stature.
Elsewhere, Nottingham Forest climbed out of the relegation zone on goal difference after a goalless draw with Fulham. Leeds United also earned a valuable point in a 0–0 stalemate at Crystal Palace despite being reduced to ten men following Gabriel Gudmundsson’s red card.
Tottenham, meanwhile, secured their first point under interim manager Igor Tudor, offering a small boost as they battle to steer clear of the drop zone.
With just eight matches remaining, the race for Champions League qualification and survival is intensifying. Manchester United will aim to maintain their momentum, while Liverpool must quickly rediscover consistency if they are to secure a return to Europe’s elite competition next season.
