Mahama Signed Peace Pact Amidst Reservations – Amaliba

Abraham Amaliba, Director of Conflict Resolution for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has disclosed that John Dramani Mahama, the party’s flagbearer, signed the 2024 election peace pact under protest.

Mahama endorsed the agreement on Thursday, November 28, 2024, despite initial indications from the NDC that they might abstain. The peace pact, a symbolic commitment by presidential candidates, seeks to ensure a peaceful electoral process in Ghana.

Speaking on The Big Issues on Channel One TV on Saturday, November 30, 2024, Amaliba clarified that Mahama’s participation reflected his personal commitment to peace but also highlighted the party’s concerns about the pact’s implementation.

“Given his reputation as an ECOWAS and AU ambassador for peace, refusing to sign would have seemed contradictory. However, it is important to note that his signature came with significant reservations,” Amaliba stated.

He referenced Mahama’s remarks during the signing, where the former president cited past instances of violence, including the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election and the eight fatalities during the 2020 elections.

“Mahama stressed that while peace pacts are important, they are meaningless if the government fails to uphold its responsibility to ensure law and order. Without that commitment, we risk repeating history,” Amaliba added.
