Mahama Endorses Bagbin as Speaker for the 9th Parliament

President-elect John Dramani Mahama has formally directed the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Leadership to renominate the Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin as Speaker of the 9th Parliament of the Fourth Republic.

The decision comes after extensive consultations among the President-elect, the NDC’s National Executive Committee, and the party’s Parliamentary Leadership.

In a statement signed by his Special Aide, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Mr. Mahama expressed confidence in Rt. Hon. Bagbin’s capacity to lead Parliament effectively, citing his exemplary parliamentary career and leadership skills.

The statement highlighted Bagbin’s extensive experience, which includes serving as a Member of Parliament for Nadowli, Minority Leader, Majority Leader, and Speaker of the 8th Parliament.

“Rt. Hon. Bagbin has demonstrated outstanding dedication and competence throughout his parliamentary service. His wealth of experience will be instrumental in steering Parliament through this critical phase in Ghana’s democratic and legislative journey,” the statement read.

The President-elect underscored Bagbin’s ability to strengthen Parliament’s oversight responsibilities and ensure the smooth functioning of the legislative body.

“Under the stewardship of Rt. Hon. Alban Bagbin, Ghana’s Parliament will be better positioned to uphold its mandate and effectively deliver on its oversight duties,” the statement added.

Bagbin’s renomination is widely regarded as a strategic step to consolidate the legislative achievements of the 8th Parliament while fostering collaboration and efficiency in the upcoming term.
