President John Dramani Mahama has reshuffled the leadership of the Ghana Armed Forces, appointing new Acting Service Chiefs to take charge of the country’s military operations. The appointments, which take effect on March 24, 2025, aim to strengthen national security and enhance operational effectiveness.
The newly appointed Acting Service Chiefs include:
- Brigadier General William Agyapong – Acting Chief of the Defence Staff
- Brigadier General Lawrence Kwaku Gbetanu – Acting Chief of Army Staff
- Commodore Godwin Livinus Bessing – Acting Chief of Naval Staff
- Air Commodore Eric Agyen-Frempong – Acting Chief of Air Staff
- Brigadier General Glover Ashong Annan – Acting Chief of Staff
President Mahama personally met with the outgoing Service Chiefs, led by General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, at Flagstaff House earlier today. He commended them for their dedication and assured them that their experience would continue to be valuable as Ghana moves forward.
The Presidency emphasized that the appointments, pending consultation with the Council of State, form part of efforts to modernize Ghana’s defense strategy. Military analysts believe this shake-up signals a renewed commitment to national security and defense modernization.
Government officials expect the newly appointed leaders to introduce fresh strategies that will bolster the military’s efficiency and preparedness. The Presidency urged the public and all stakeholders to support the new leadership in ensuring national stability.
Spokesperson to the President and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, signed the official statement announcing the changes.
