Former Majority Leader Osei Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu has admitted that the campaign of NPP flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia lacked the expected energy, highlighting the party’s struggles in the 2024 elections.
Speaking in an interview with Nhyira FM, Kyei-Mensah-Bonsu, who chaired the NPP’s manifesto committee, reflected on key findings from the Ashanti Region regarding the party’s significant defeat.
He observed that unlike in past elections, where large crowds enthusiastically gathered in various towns and cities to show support, such displays were noticeably absent in 2024.
“I started noticing signs that the election would be challenging, although we remained hopeful for a better outcome. The fact that the polls were conducted in December allowed us to regain some support.
“If the elections had taken place in August, Dr. Bawumia might have secured only around 30% against John Mahama, as the economic situation was particularly dire at the time.
“However, as the election drew closer, there were some improvements in economic conditions,” he remarked.
Dr. Bawumia ultimately secured 4,877,611 votes (41.75%), while his main opponent, John Mahama, won with 6,591,790 votes (56.42%).
Findings from the Ashanti Region identified major factors that contributed to the NPP’s defeat. These included the party’s internal delegate system for selecting leaders, which weakened grassroots mobilization, and widespread economic hardships that diminished public confidence in the party.
