Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams says he would not be surprised if Andre Ayew earns a place in Ghana’s squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Ayew, who has been absent from the Black Stars since featuring in international friendlies in March 2024, has missed several key matches, including Africa Cup of Nations and World Cup qualifiers. Despite his absence, the minister believes the experienced forward still has a role to play in the national team.
Speaking in an interview on Adom FM, Kofi Adams said Ayew remains in contention as long as he continues playing competitive football.
“Dede Ayew is picking up, and as long as he hasn’t retired, I won’t be surprised if he makes it into the 2026 World Cup squad,” he stated.
The 36-year-old recently joined Dutch club NAC Breda in the Eredivisie after spending months without a team. He has started the side’s last three league matches and is working to rediscover his scoring form.
With the World Cup approaching, conversations around squad selection are expected to intensify. Ghana’s technical team is likely to assess both experienced players and emerging talents as they prepare a competitive squad for the tournament. Ayew’s leadership and experience could boost his chances if he maintains consistent performances at club level.
