Icon Energies Donate GH¢1m Boost Into Black Stars’ 2026 World Cup Preparations

Ghana’s quest to make a strong impact at the 2026 FIFA World Cup has received a significant financial lift, following a GH¢1 million donation from Icon Energies to support the Black Stars.

The contribution forms part of a broader national fundraising campaign aimed at mobilising resources for the senior national team’s preparations ahead of the global tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.

Chairman of the World Cup Fundraising Committee and Deputy Minister for Finance, Thomas Nyarko Ampem, praised the gesture, describing it as a timely show of patriotism and belief in the team’s potential.

“This donation reflects a strong sense of national pride,” he said. “It will go a long way to support our preparations and strengthen our collective ambition of delivering a successful World Cup campaign.”

The GH¢1 million support from Icon Energies adds to a growing wave of contributions from corporate Ghana and individuals who have responded to the government’s call to back the team. Since its launch in March 2026, the fundraising initiative has set an ambitious target of $30 million to cover key expenses, including international friendlies, logistics, and tournament participation.

Beyond the corporate space, the campaign has also attracted support from the entertainment industry, with notable figures like Shatta Wale and Stonebwoy pledging both financial and service-based contributions.

Officials from the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the Ministry of Youth and Sports have reiterated that the initiative is intended to reduce pressure on the public purse while encouraging a shared sense of ownership among Ghanaians.

Meanwhile, uncertainty still surrounds the team’s technical direction, as the search for a new head coach continues. Recent reports linking names such as Joachim Löw and Kwesi Appiah have been met with denials, leaving the position yet to be filled.

Despite that, the steady inflow of financial backing is expected to provide stability as preparations intensify. Mr. Ampem has therefore called on more corporate institutions to emulate Icon Energies, stressing that the success of the Black Stars remains a unifying goal for the nation.
