The government is preparing to rename Kotoka International Airport (KIA) to Accra International Airport, with plans already underway to formalise the change through Parliament.
The decision was announced by the Majority Leader, Mahama Ayariga, during a leadership media briefing held ahead of the resumption of the Ninth Parliament on Tuesday, February 3, 2026.
According to Mr Ayariga, the renaming of the country’s main international airport will be done through legislation to be presented by the Minister for Transport.
“A bill will be brought by the Minister for Transport for the name to be changed from Kotoka International Airport to Accra International Airport,” he said.
He explained that the move forms part of a wider set of legislative measures expected to be introduced when Parliament reconvenes.
Beyond the airport renaming, Mr Ayariga revealed that the Transport Minister will also lay a number of transport-related bills before the House. These include the Maritime Offences Bill and a proposed Road Traffic Bill.
He noted that the Road Traffic Bill is expected to address long-standing issues around the operation of commercial motorcycles, commonly referred to as okada, by providing a legal and regulatory framework for the sector.
The announcement signals a busy legislative agenda for Parliament, with transport reforms expected to feature prominently in the upcoming session.
