Ghanaian Peacekeepers Recovering After Missile Strike on UN Base in Lebanon

Four Ghanaian soldiers injured during a missile attack on their base in southern Lebanon are stable and recovering, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.

The incident occurred on Friday, March 6, when the Ghanaian Battalion Headquarters serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) came under missile fire amid escalating clashes between the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

According to an earlier statement from the Ghana Armed Forces, two missiles struck the base between 17:45 and 17:52 local time during an exchange of fire in the area. Initial reports indicated that two soldiers were critically injured while another suffered trauma.

However, in a subsequent update, the Ministry of Defence clarified that four soldiers sustained minor injuries and are currently stable and recovering.

One soldier who suffered serious injuries to both legs and the hip was successfully evacuated to Beirut for urgent medical care. The soldier underwent surgery on Saturday morning and is now reported to be stable and recuperating.

The ministry also revealed that a fire broke out at the soldiers’ accommodation following the attack, destroying the personal belongings of 15 officers stationed at the base.

Meanwhile, the Government of Ghana has formally lodged a complaint at the United Nations Headquarters, stressing that all parties involved in the conflict must respect the neutrality and safety of peacekeepers operating in the area.

Ghana also acknowledged the support it has received from the international community. According to the Defence Ministry, France’s Minister Delegate to the Minister of Armed Forces and Veterans Affairs, Alice Rufo, contacted Ghanaian authorities by phone to express solidarity.

She indicated that France has also raised concerns at the United Nations, noting that French troops are among the peacekeepers deployed in Lebanon.

The Government of Ghana expressed appreciation for the gesture and reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety of Ghanaian troops serving under the UN flag.
