Despite the recent change in government, Ghana has reiterated its commitment to maintaining a steady and cooperative foreign policy towards the United Kingdom. President John Mahama has assured UK officials that bilateral relations between the two nations will remain strong, reflecting Ghana’s broader diplomatic strategy of consistency in international partnerships.

During a high-level diplomatic meeting in Accra, President Mahama hosted UK Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner to discuss key areas of mutual interest, including trade, investment, security, and cultural cooperation. Addressing concerns over potential policy shifts following his administration’s assumption of office, Mahama emphasized that Ghana’s foreign policy towards the UK remains unchanged.
“Our relationship with the United Kingdom is built on a solid foundation of historical ties, shared interests, and mutual respect. As such, our government will continue to strengthen this bond and explore new opportunities for collaboration,” President Mahama stated.

Deputy Prime Minister Rayner’s visit to Ghana forms part of a broader UK initiative to deepen engagement with African nations, recognizing the continent’s growing economic and strategic significance. Before arriving in Ghana, Rayner had concluded a state visit to Ethiopia, where she oversaw the signing of a £475 million investment deal aimed at fostering economic development. She also held diplomatic discussions with African Union Chairman Mahamoud Ali Youssouf and Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, underlining the UK’s commitment to advancing partnerships across Africa.
