Ghana Shippers’ Authority Celebrates 50 Years of Excellence

The Ghana Shippers’ Authority (GSA) has officially launched its 50th-anniversary celebrations, commemorating five decades of transformative contributions to Ghana’s shipping and logistics industry.

The event, held on Friday, November 29, 2024, at the Marriott Hotel in Accra, was themed “Celebrating 50 Years of Resilience; Honouring Our Legacy and Inspiring Innovative Excellence.” It provided an opportunity to reflect on the Authority’s milestones while unveiling strategic plans for the future.

In his keynote address, the Minister for Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, acknowledged the pivotal role the GSA has played in Ghana’s economic progress.

“The Ghana Shippers’ Authority has been a key stakeholder in facilitating international trade, reducing costs, and protecting shippers’ interests,” he said.

He highlighted key achievements, including the annual cocoa freight negotiations and the ongoing construction of the Boankra Inland Port. The Minister also emphasized the significance of the newly enacted Ghana Shippers’ Authority Act, 2024 (Act 1122), which strengthens the Authority’s mandate.

“The new Act provides the Authority with the requisite legal framework to effectively regulate the commercial shipping sector and address challenges such as illegitimate charges by service providers,” Mr. Asiamah explained.

The Chief Executive Officer of GSA, Kwesi Baffour Okyere Sarpong, described the 50-year journey as one of resilience and innovation.

“Fifty years is not just a number; it is a tribute to the legacy and an ode to the innovative spirit that propels us forward,” he remarked.

Mr. Okyere Sarpong highlighted several accomplishments, including the modernization of the Authority’s operations. These advancements include an e-platform to address non-tariff barriers and the categorization of shippers into tiers—Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze—for tailored services.

He also provided updates on the Boankra Inland Port project, describing it as a flagship initiative that is 50% complete and poised to revolutionize Ghana’s logistics sector.

“This multimodal transport innovation will seamlessly connect Ghana’s land, sea, and air transport systems, creating immense benefits for our landlocked neighbors and boosting trade,” he noted.

Stella Wilson, Chairperson of the GSA Board, commended the Authority’s commitment to good governance and adaptability in the face of industry changes.

“Our robust governance frameworks have ensured integrity in decision-making, enhancing our reputation nationally and internationally,” she stated.

Reflecting on past challenges, Madam Wilson lauded the leadership’s ability to navigate hurdles and implement effective solutions, positioning the Authority for continued success.

“Our vision and dedication have guided us through difficulties, allowing us to achieve remarkable success,” she remarked.

Speakers and guests emphasized the need for continuous innovation in the shipping industry. The Transport Minister called for the adoption of green shipping practices and strengthened international partnerships.

“The next 50 years present an opportunity to build on this enviable legacy, transforming the Authority into a world-class organization,” Mr. Asiamah urged.

In conclusion, CEO Baffour Okyere Sarpong called for renewed dedication.

“Let this anniversary be a call to action. Let us dream bigger, aim higher, and work harder to leave a foundation that will make future generations proud,” he said.

The celebration marked a significant moment in Ghana’s logistics history, highlighting the Authority’s achievements and its vision for a sustainable and innovative future.
